Official Conclusion of the OpenSDN Bootcamp 2025

Table of Contents

The OpenSDN Bootcamp was successfully held from June 18 to June 20, 2025, attracting approximately 40 participants (with 50% participating on-line and 50% participating on-site). The audience was diverse, comprising corporate employees, students from Chulalongkorn University, and individuals from the general public with an interest in networking technologies. Notably, the event drew international attention, with attendees from Russia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

The intensive three-day program was structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and cloud infrastructure.

  • Day 1 (June 18, 2025): The bootcamp commenced with foundational concepts, including an Introduction to Cloud Computing and Basic Networking. This was followed by a detailed session on OpenStack, positioned as a quintessential “Cloud OS,” and concluded with a practical demonstration and a lab session.
  • Day 2 (June 19, 2025): The focus shifted to SDN, beginning with SDN Concepts and an Introduction to OpenSDN. Participants were introduced to core OpenSDN Components, namely the Controller, vRouter, and Analytics engine. The agenda also incorporated emerging technologies with a session on Vector Databases. The day’s activities were reinforced with an OpenSDN Demonstration and a technical tutorial on the OpenSDN vRouter Forwarder.
  • Day 3 (June 20, 2025): The final day provided a Deep Dive into OpenSDN, equipping participants with advanced knowledge for OpenSDN Basic Troubleshooting, An introduction to OpenSDN source code  and a technical session on OpenSDN Flows Management.

The detailed schedule of the bootcamp with presentations can accessed via the corresponding section of opensdn.io: https://opensdn.io/resources/opensdn-bootcamp  . All talks were recorded and are available at the YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCA3Hn5TlEI&list=PLic1fGittFPeG4nhdEUF7g3oymOsWgo8y.

The primary objective of the bootcamp was to foster talent and stimulate interest in OpenSDN development. This goal was successfully achieved, as evidenced by the recruitment of several promising students from Chulalongkorn University who will be undertaking their final-year projects focused on OpenSDN. This outcome is a direct fulfillment of the event’s strategic aims.

Given the success of this year’s event, we plan to host the OpenSDN Bootcamp annually. The vision is to cultivate a robust and expanding community around OpenSDN, creating a platform that encourages collaboration and generates innovative ideas for the future development of the technology.

Enhanced IPv6 Capabilities in OpenSDN

OpenSDN, the evolution of Tungsten Fabric, continues to stand out with its dual IP stack support, enabling seamless IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence in modern networks. The recent R24.1 release introduces key enhancements, including full IPv6 support for metadata services, NAT66, and virtual DNS. These updates allow OpenSDN to support pure IPv6 environments without the need for IPv4 fallbacks, making it even more versatile for today’s networking demands. For an in-depth dive into these features, check out my blog for technical details on the implementation.
